Getting Found Locally: Google Business Profile Basics

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “bakery in [city],” Google usually shows a map with three highlighted businesses above the regular results — often called the local map pack. Businesses that show up there get seen first, before a visitor even scrolls to organic listings.

Whether you appear there is driven largely by one free tool: your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). This article covers what it is, why it matters, and the concrete steps to set yours up properly.

What is a Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that shows your business name, location or service area, hours, phone number, website, photos, and reviews directly in Google Search and Google Maps. It’s separate from your website, but it’s often the first thing a nearby customer sees about you.

You don’t need a storefront to have one — service-area businesses like plumbers, electricians, or consultants can set up a profile that shows the areas they serve without displaying a public address.

Why the map pack matters

Here’s a simplified example of what a local search result can look like for a search like “coffee shop downtown”:

Example — Local Map Pack
1
Complete, optimized profileFull hours, categories, photos, responds to reviews
2
Complete profile, fewer reviewsAccurate details, active but newer listing
—
Incomplete or unclaimed profileMissing hours, no photos, inconsistent address

The exact ranking factors are Google’s and change over time, but relevance, distance, and how complete and trusted your profile looks all play a role. An incomplete or inconsistent profile makes it harder to compete, no matter how good your business is.

Setting up your profile correctly

Start at google.com/business and either claim your existing listing or create a new one. Once you’re in, focus on completeness:

  • Business name: use your real, legal business name — not a name stuffed with keywords like “Best Plumber in [City] LLC.”
  • Category: pick the most accurate primary category, and add relevant secondary categories.
  • Hours: keep these current, including holiday hours — an outdated “closed” listing turns customers away.
  • Service area or address: storefronts show an address; service-area businesses can hide the address and list service areas instead.
  • Photos: add real photos of your location, team, or work. Listings with photos tend to get more engagement than ones without.
  • Business description: write a short, honest description of what you do — no fabricated awards or invented years of experience.

Tip: If your website doesn’t yet reflect this same information clearly, that’s worth fixing at the same time. Our Local SEO service covers profile setup and on-site alignment together.

Keeping your business info consistent

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone — the core details that should match exactly across your website, your Google Business Profile, and any directories you’re listed on (Yelp, Facebook, industry directories, etc.).

Inconsistent

“123 Main St” on your site, “123 Main Street, Suite 2” on Google, old phone number on a directory.

Consistent

The exact same name, address format, and phone number everywhere your business is listed online.

Inconsistent details can confuse both customers and search engines about whether these are really the same business. Doing a periodic check across your main listings is worth the time.

Handling reviews the right way

Reviews influence both customer trust and, to some degree, local visibility. The sustainable approach is straightforward: deliver good service, then make it easy for satisfied customers to leave a review — for example, sharing your review link after a job is complete.

Respond to reviews, positive and negative, professionally. Never write fake reviews for your own business or offer incentives in exchange for reviews — this violates Google’s policies and can get a listing suspended.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the profile unclaimed, so anyone can suggest edits to your listing.
  • Stuffing keywords into the business name field.
  • Ignoring messages or questions customers post on the profile.
  • Letting hours, phone numbers, or photos go stale for months at a time.

Quick setup checklist

Tick these off as you go:

None of this guarantees a specific spot in the map pack — no one can promise that, since it depends on Google’s algorithm and local competition. But a complete, honest, consistent profile is the foundation everything else builds on.
